Perfectionism

Images for Blog Post - Perfectionism

I’ve struggled with perfectionism my whole life. I want people to like me, I want to do things right, and so I try to be perfect so I can be liked.

The only problem is this is a major source of anxiety. If you struggle with perfectionism it probably keeps you from feeling relaxed and energized in your day to day life.

So how do you know if this is you? You have some perfectionism if you:

  • You edit all the typos in your texts to your best friend that you’ve known forever
  • You get anxious if you’re going to be a few minutes late
  • You are worried that a friend might be upset with you

If you said yes to even one of these you have some perfectionism in you. The good news is that awareness is the first and most important step.

Simply repeating to yourself, “I want everything to be perfect and sometimes that isn’t healthy for me” will start the healing process.

When perfectionism is unconscious, it’s impossible to change. The simple act of noticing is going to cause big changes for you.

Don’t judge yourself for being a perfectionist and do your best not to beat yourself up for it. It’s very human to want to do things well and even perfectly.

Simply notice that it’s happening and then move on. The healing will start to happen simply because you noticed it.

Another great way to work with your perfectionism is to listen to the latest episode from the Burnout to Brilliance podcast where I tell the story of the incident that made me start seriously changing my relationship with perfectionism. Listen on iTunes, Spotify or other podcasting apps.

  1. I liked what you said about noticing typos in your texts to people you’ve known forever. It’s like a habit I’ve not truly noticed like I am now. And it’s like what’s the point and reason we do this? It’s definitely more for us then it is for the other person! Thanks for pointing this out.

      1. Will do. One way you could support me is by checking out my content too and we can keep a convo going.
