Your Money Beliefs

Money Beliefs

Your money beliefs have very little to do with money. They have to do with things like self-worth, survival, and feeling like a fraud.

Some of my clients’ money beliefs are,

“It’s my duty to take care of everyone and everything (and not get paid that much for it.)”

“When I was a child, I was neglected and my parents didn’t come when I needed them. Now clients won’t come. They’re not coming. It’s not going to work.”

“I have to be very careful with the money I have because I won’t be able to make more.”

“My parents weren’t good parents so now they should pay for things for me now.”

“I don’t know if I’m going to be able to handle the amount of work it takes to make good money.”

Some of my old money beliefs are,

“It’s not safe for me to spend money.”

“I’m going to end up poor, not be able to pay my bills, homeless.”

“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.”

“Money mindset isn’t changeable, so I’ll never be able to have an abundant mindset and make a lot of money.”

“If I’m rich, my friends won’t like me.”

“If I’m rich, my friends will expect me to solve their problems.”

The good news is that these old beliefs aren’t true and are completely changeable. As you change your beliefs around money, you’ll be able to make better decisions about your finances and both make more money in your business.

Say a friend of yours wants to go to a fancy restaurant but this restaurant isn’t exciting for you. You don’t feel like it’s worth the money but you don’t want to disappoint your friend, so you go anyways and spend money on something that isn’t valuable to you.

This decision comes from the old beliefs,

“It’s my duty to take care of everyone and everything.”

and

“If I’m rich, my friends won’t like me.”

But if those beliefs had less of a hold on you, you could find a solution that works for both you and your friend. You could suggest a fun and tasty restaurant that’s less expensive, like Pow Wow Cafe for my Toronto peeps! Or you could suggest another activity you’re excited about. Maybe you love Meghan Trainer and so you’re happy to spend $150 on a ticket to see her.

When you spend your money in a way that’s aligned and energizing for you, it gives you the energy you need to go out and attract more of it so spending a lot of money on a concert ticket you’re excited about is very different than begrudgingly going to the expensive restaurant.

Here’s another example. In my business, a client signed up for a trial session with me and I forgot to email her back to confirm and to send her the address. Luckily we were able to do the session on the phone and she signed up for another session. But then I forgot to email her AGAIN with the address.

I was busy those weeks but it seems like something else was happening. Some part of me was sabotaging me from giving her the information she needed to work with me and ultimately she cancelled her next session, which I totally understand.

Because I have the beliefs,

“If I’m rich, my friends will expect me to solve their problems”

and

“Money mindset isn’t changeable.”

I was unconsciously pushing away a new client that came to me because if I made a lot of money I’d be worried that my friends would ask me for it or that the financial life that I was used to would change and that would be uncomfortable.

Awareness is the first step when it comes to overcoming old money blocks so simply reading this and reflecting on your old money beliefs is starting to bring more awareness to them and starting the process of shifting these beliefs.

The next step is to address these beliefs physically in your body because they come from painful childhood experiences that are stored physically in your body.

For example, if you have the belief,

“It’s not safe for me to have money.”

It likely comes from an experience where it wasn’t safe for you to get your needs met as a child. Maybe you were hurt physically or emotionally when you tried to get your needs met. Maybe you were made fun of for being hungry or maybe there was physical abuse that happened and because it was an incredibly painful event or because it happened repeatedly there’s actually suppressed fear still stored in your nervous system as tension in your neck or back or head.

I want you to start to release these physical manifestations so my newest podcast episode will begin to do exactly that. It will lead you through an exercise of releasing old money blocks from the body so make sure you check it out.
