One of the best ways to keep those socialized as women trapped, is to say, “things are good for women now.”
Things were bad in the past, but now… Women are allowed to have careers and wear pants, so it’s all good!
But the patriarchy is alive and well.
“Britney Spears has people controlling her uterus but Bill Cosby is free.” – Randi Mayem Singer (@instarandigram)
And according to the documentary @thischangeseverythinghollywood in 2018:
-
-
- 92% of the directors for the top 250 domestic releases were male
- 85% of the writers of the top 100 films were male
- 78% of Rotten Tomatoes reviewers were male
- And 75% of lead characters were male, the exact same percentage as in 1946!
-
The stories that shape our culture are being written, directed, played, and reviewed mostly by men.
Because of this, female characters are one dimensional: beautiful and wholesome or bitchy and slutty. They often don’t have career ambition or passion.
When I was a kid, the Little Mermaid gave up her voice to find a man. And sadly many movies today are reworked versions of this same story.
According to Wikipedia, 85% of countries worldwide have men as elected or appointed heads of state or government (March 2021.)
And a recent survey by Stop Street Harassment found that 81% of women have experienced some form of sexual harassment.
This is not parity. This is not equality. This is misogyny and patriarchy.
As a kid, I thought it was bad to be a feminist. But now I’m proud to be fucking feminist.
If you have low self esteem or body image issues, it’s probably at least in part because of the fucking patriarchy.
There’s poison in the water. And the sooner it’s acknowledged, the sooner it can be cleaned up.
In solidarity,
Bryn
