Yesterday, I got home from work exhausted.  I crawled into bed and turned on an episode of the Good Wife.  I watched one or two then got up to make dinner.  Watched another couple, took a bath, watched a couple more, went to bed.

For those of you would haven’t found it, the Good Wife is a fast paced lawyer drama where almost every episode starts with a crime and then the characters spend the rest of the episode finding out what really happened and proving that their client is innocent or winning anyway they can.

It’s well done.  The acting is good, the characters are multi-dimensional and I’m realizing it’s influencing my life.

Last night I had a couple of moments where I thought, I shouldn’t say that on the phone because our phones are tapped.  I also had a dream where I was making a video recording and then thought, “Oh no, I was only asked to take pictures.  What if the video has too much information that could get us in trouble? What if Lemond Bishop, the most influential drug dealer in Chicago according to the show, decides to kill me?”

And after a couple of these instances I started asking myself – how is this show influencing my life? What fears in me is it feeding? What strengths do the characters have that inspire me? What is the impact?

When I lived at Yasodhara Ashram, we asked the question, What do I want to feed my mind? What stories do I want to consume? Which stories will lead me to create the life that I want?

And so I stand at yet another tiny crossroads asking, how will I build the life that I want?
