Befriending Fear

I’ve been reading this book on the spiritual significance of the menstrual cycle and it’s been changing my life.

It talks about the spiritual growth you can do at each phase of the cycle.

I ovulated a few days ago which means I’m in the “fall” of my cycle heading towards “winter”. It means I’m going inward and feeling my feelings more.

I woke up with the dull persistent ache of anxiety this morning. And my initial reaction was WTF, I hate this part of my cycle, I hate that I’m scared more. I hate it.

But then I asked, what’s the spiritual significance of this? What am I learning?

And I realized it’s an opportunity for me to allow the fear to flow through my body. To feel the tingly excitement that happens when fear is flowing as opposed to me trying to shut it down or numb it.

It’s an opportunity to love the scared inner child part of me.

And that it’s going to allow me to do better deeper work with my clients.

You can befriend your fear too.

When you feel anxious…

      1. Notice where you feel it in your body

Sometimes it might be in your chest, for me today it’s in my lower back. Breathe into wherever you feel the anxiety and as best you can welcome it into your chest or back or wherever it is.

      2. Be kind

Remind yourself, it’s safe to be scared. Everyone gets scared sometimes. Even Cardi B and Beyonce.

      3. Apply heat

Fear for me is typically a “cold” feeling so having a hot shower and then putting on a cozy sweater usually helps. If you feel cold you can do that.

If your fear feels hot, you can do the opposite like pointing your fan towards that hot scared part of your body.

You’re doing better than you think.

Hugs,

Bryn

PS If you want to learn how to feel grounded and present when you’re scared, the next Toronto Somatic Workshop is on that exact topic.

I feel so lucky to run these Toronto Somatic Workshops. One thing I’m so grateful for is that we consistently attract some of the kindest, wisest, most badass people who support each other to go deeply into their bodies and their feelings to heal.

And in addition to feeling like they’ve learned something at the end of the workshops participants often say things like: I feel lighter, I feel less alone, I feel warm and cozy and held.

You’re so warmly invited to the Grounding and Presence Workshop Sat Jan 27th in the West End (near Lansdowne Stn)
