did they wake up?
are they upset?
have I killed the butterflies?
and if I have
will the world fall apart?

clear
calm
I sit
& write
to you.
the night draws longer
and the day draws closer
and I am free
from sleep
what am I learning
as I burn the midnight oil?
patience.

ice shake
shake
and bake
a cake
with me
my world turned up-side-down
tumbled
tousled
tangled
and the cups are chipped
and the bacon falls on the floor
sitting on the kitchen floor
I weep
because I know
nothing
will ever
be the same.

a shiver
runs up my back
it’s fall
and it courses through my blood
with hints of winteryness
and there’s a hint of mint
on your breath
as you whisper
in my ear
what I’ve known
all along.

and what is me?
and why are we
together?
the trick of the silver tongue
touches something
and we are
alive.

I open my mouth
and pop one in
delighted
sweetness tickles my tongue
electricity courses through my body
and I know
I have come home
to you.

solid
like a rock
you stand beside me
breathing.
I turn and walk away
taking a piece of your heart
with me.
I am alone now
in the silence
I breathe in
I am free.

stories
of hearts broken
too young
but they are alive
and I laugh
at their jokes
I am scared
by the suicide attempts
some darkness
I do not have
but I know where the darkness is now
in me
so I can see it
in you
I can see your heart
can you see mine?
feel it.
