flows
past my pant legs
flooding my feet
I am free
I dive in
floating on the surface
you hold my body
carry me away
and I can’t get stuck anymore
the water rushes
the water knows the way.

like a car crash
back
to reality
I try to escape
but eyes pierce
and questions cut
I join the dance
of cutting questions
dodging
then I attack
fierce
elbows out
and then we laugh
pretending
we never
fought
at all.

looking out
at the lake
you’re there
I pause
hearts begin
to beat
in unison
spine lengthens
breath
rocks me
like the waves
rock
the small boat
rolling
rhythmic
I let go.
