Marianne was in the bathtub when she got the call. It was back when we all had physical answering machines so she could hear the message come in. “Oh, Marianne, you’ve done it again. You know, I like this one even better. I’d love to have you on the show.” The voice was unmistakable. It was Oprah Winfrey.
Marianne Williamson’s heart dropped. Her face flushed.
When her first book, Return to Love, came out Oprah had Marianne on the Oprah Show and because of that her book had done extraordinarily well and she got a great book deal for her second book. So this time around she had a big team of marketers.
Her marketing team kept pressuring her to get herself a spot on a national show. She would check in with herself and the still small voice would say, “just wait.” So she waited.
But as her publication date drew nearer, her marketers started applying even more pressure. She would check in, the still small voice would say, “just wait.” She would wait. She would check in and would get, “just wait.” So she would wait.
But after weeks of this she caved and booked herself on a national show.
And shortly after that as she sat in the bathtub after a long day she got the call from Oprah. Oprah wanted to have her on the show but because she was already booked on another show couldn’t take her.
On an episode of the Beautiful Writer’s Podcast, Marianne Williamson described what happened and said, “You can only imagine how much money I lost.”
