Starting a business has brought so many of my insecurities to the surface. My fear of being seen, valuing my time and energy, my self-worth, fear of failing is all triggered constantly as I build this self care empire.
I’ve decided to take a sharp right turn in terms of my niche and even though I’ve made the decision, it’s hard to get all parts of me on board. What are people going to think? Are you going to feel abandoned? What if it doesn’t work? What if I really am an imposter?
If you’re a business owner, you’re absolutely going to have to learn to make quick decisions and get all parts of you on board. If some part of you is in resistance – it’s going to be very difficult to run a profitable and fulfilling business.
Say you want to start posting your artwork on Instagram daily or weekly to get your work out there but some part of you is scared to do it. So you post one day but then you put it off for a while. You occasionally post but it’s not consistent.
The important question to ask is: Why are you not taking action?
Now initially you may come up with the surface answers – I’m too busy, I don’t have enough followers so it won’t make a difference, it’s probably not going to work.
Deeper down you’ll find more answers – I’m terrified of failing, I’m scared of being seen, I’m scared of being made fun of.
Maybe as a child, you showed your art to someone and got made fun of and so now some younger part of you is freaking out. She’s scared of getting hurt again the way she was before. This is part of your inner child.
Your job isn’t to battle your inner child, you don’t want to suppress it or send it into submission. Your job is to comfort it.
She’s just a kid. She’s scared. She needs to know everything is going to be okay. So call on your higher self or your inner wisdom to comfort her.
I’m very familiar with this. As I switch niches, my inner child is totally freaking out and screaming all the reasons I shouldn’t do it, all the reasons I’m going to be hated, all the reasons I’m going to fail. And my job is to comfort her. I tell her, “Don’t worry. I’m going to take care of this. You don’t have to do anything. We’re going to be okay.”
She softens a little and then the next morning is screaming all over again. I comfort her again.
She doesn’t want me to write this article so I comfort her and then write the article anyways. She gets to be scared and I get to keep taking action.
So what do you do if you’re struggling with this?
Take a moment to talk to your inner child. Write in your journal. Ask her what’s wrong and let her tell you all the reasons she’s scared and all the things that can go wrong.
Then call on the deep down place in you, the place of inner wisdom and compassion. Let that part comfort your inner child, tell her everything’s going to be okay, that you’re going to get through this.
And this kind of deep work can be difficult initially. It takes time to see what’s going on beneath the surface and to comfort the inner child who’s in pain because of your past.
