Your Inner Child is Sabotaging Your Profit (and How to Heal)

I was interviewed for the Small But Mighty podcast last week (episode will come out later this month!) and in the interview the host asked me about my journey to becoming an entrepreneur. And let me tell you it was a LONGGG story with many twists and turns.

My inner child has struggled against me becoming a business owner from the very beginning. I remember when I was working with my first ever business and book coach to help market my book and he said to me, “You need to teach workshops about courage online.” And my response was, “No… Not happening. We’ll have to find another way. I’m not doing that.”

But then after months of working with him, I finally succumbed to the suggestion and tried it out. I realized I could help people and that I even liked it. My business was born.

But my inner child did not stop sabotaging there. She’s been setting up tricks and ambushes all along the way.

Now of course, my inner child doesn’t mean me any harm. She’s just freaked out. Things haven’t always gone well when she follows her heart in the past, so she’s scared she’s going to get hurt again.

And your inner child is probably scared too. So I wanted to share the two primary ways your inner child is likely sabotaging your profits and how to begin to heal, make more money, and help more people.

The 2 Main Ways Your Inner Child is Sabotaging Your Business:

  1. Hiding

My inner child told me not to post on Facebook and Instagram and to definitely never do any kind of live video. I battled and fought against this but even then she’d try to get me to post less frequently, to not post too often.

Your inner child might be saying NO to writing blog posts or social media posts or IG lives or to launching your product. And if you’re not visible, how can you help the folks that you’re meant to help?

The good news is there are simple steps you can take to begin to heal.

    How to Overcome Hiding:

Step 1: Bring forward a deeper wiser part of you, it could be your intuition or your higher self.

Step 2: Get this deeper wiser part to tell your inner child that you’ll protect her or them.

Step 3: Tell your inner child that you understand that she or they wants to hide but you’re going to put yourself out there anyways. And protect them if anything hard happens.

Step 4: Do the IG live or launch the product or whatever you’ve been avoiding.

Step 5: If someone says something mean or gives you constructive criticism, protect your inner child. Tell her or them that it’s not their fault, that they’re a good kid.

  2. Hustling

This is where you’re working really hard but your inner child makes sure you’re working on all the wrong things.

For example instead of running one webinar or one launch strategy and then tweaking it to make it better, starting over completely and creating way more work for yourself.

And I have to say my inner child has done this to me OVER AND OVER. When I look at how many programs and webinars I’ve created over the past few years and then abandoned because it didn’t work as well as I wanted it to, I am astounded. Instead of really taking a closer look and see which PART of it didn’t work, I’d throw out the ENTIRE strategy and start from scratch. And when I look back now at some of my past programs, they’re actually REALLY good and I’m not sure why I decided to throw them out completely.

Other examples of hustling could include:

      • Following up with the same client or customer 10 times instead of going to networking events to meet more potential clients or customers.
      • Focusing on your logo and branding before you have any clients or customers instead of getting out there and trying to meet the folks who will want to buy from you.

And honestly, the reason your inner child can be so slippery and difficult to pin down in this is because at different stages of your business you need to be working on different parts of your business so it’s hard to know what to do when.

One simple way to know whether you’re hustling or not is to check in with your energy. If you’re feeling stressed and frantic, you’re likely hustling and need to slow your brain down.

How to Overcome Hustling:

Step 1: Intuition Session

Make a time either once a week or once a month to connect deeply with your intuition about the direction of your business. Schedule two hours. In the first hour connect deeply with your intuition – I typically go for a long walk in nature but you can do whatever feels best for you. For example – a walk, yoga or drawing – something that’s fun and that you enjoy. Do it alone.

And I sometimes listen to inspiring podcasts on my walk if I’m having a hard time tapping into inspiration and intuition.

In the second hour, take notes or record voice memo answers to these questions:

      • What am I excited about in my business? What feels alive and energizing?
      • What area of my business do I need to focus on right now? What’s going to best support my customers and potential customers?
      • And where is my inner child trying to sabotage and make things more difficult for me?

Record your responses and review them whenever you feel you’re going into “hustle” energy.

Step 2: Implement Your Learnings

Honestly this is the hardest part: DO WHAT YOUR INTUITION TELLS YOU TO DO!! I had a moment about a month ago where I got some real deep important clarity about what I need to do. And guess what? I still haven’t fully implemented it (although I did work on it today :)!).

It’s easy to procrastinate when your intuition tells you to do something in your business and what your intuition is telling you to do is HARD or UNCOMFORTABLE but it’s absolutely essential to growing the business that’s aligned with your purpose and to help those people that you’re meant to help.

Step 3: Get to Know Your Inner Child Better

It’s important to begin to learn about where your inner child is really coming from. What painful experience you went through has led her or them to start sabotaging you? And because I really wanted to go into a lot of detail about the key types of experiences that happen during childhood and can really trigger your inner child, I created the free Money Blocks webinar where I’ll walk you through the key money block, what ages they’re formed at and how to begin to heal your inner child.

This’ll help you start to figure out which money blocks are strongest for you and teach you how to begin to heal this so you can make more money and help more people in your business.
