I used to believe you either had high self esteem or low self esteem. I think we filled out a quiz in high school to see whether our self esteem was “high” or “low.”

And OF COURSE, I wanted to have high self esteem.

So whenever I had negative self talk or critical thoughts, I thought OH NO! I have LOW SELF ESTEEM! This is bad!! I must stop the negative thinking!!

But here’s the thing. I have a human brain, and human brains are programmed for negative thoughts. And you do too!

The people who survived during cave people times were the ones who were looking for the threats: checking for bears or other dangers. And our brains HAVEN’T EVOLVED in 40,000 years (or even longer depending on which scientist you read).

So EVERYONE has negative self talk sometimes. Because we all have human brains!

Oprah has it. Barack Obama has it. The Dalai Lama has it.

Whoever you look up to, their brains have negative self talk too!

So it’s okay if you have negative thoughts! You’re supposed to have negative self talk sometimes. Because you’re human and you have a human brain.

Now, of course, there are things you can do when you’re in a negative self talk spiral. And if you’re there right now, I highly recommend my Anxiety Mini-Training that’ll help you reduce it RIGHT AWAY.

But it’s also OKAY that you have it. NOTHING HAS GONE WRONG HERE.

YOU’RE HUMAN and humans have negative self talk.

And it doesn’t go away once you make a million dollars or marry your dream partner(s) or lose 10 pounds.

I know I sometimes think that once I get “there,” everything will be better and easier and I won’t feel challenged or anxious or negative again.

But you will and that’s okay. You can handle negative self talk now. And you’ll be able to handle it in the future.
