Top 4 Things I Learned from 2020

On March 16th, I was halfway through reading Cave in the Snow about Tenzin Palmo, one of the first Western women to become a Bhuddist monk. She lived and meditated in a cave for 12 years, 10 feet wide and 6 feet deep. She didn’t have a bed, only a meditation box that she sat in and meditated all night. No electricity or running water.

Here are the top 4 things I learned from 2020:

  1. Spirituality
I was inspired by Tenzin Palmo. I was isolating in my room because I had cold symptoms and wasn’t eligible for a COVID test. My room was my cave and at least it had heat and wifi.

I leaned hard on my spirituality. After the initial panic about the pandemic and the world shutting down I realized that incessantly reading every new COVID article was only amping up my anxiety. I decided not to look at social media and on my breaks from work would read my spiritual books. I started doing Wim Hof breathing exercises more regularly. And was able to come to a steady stable place despite everything that was happening.

Then in the fall, my spirituality deepened even further. I was in a workshop when I got the message, “You’re doing a disservice to your clients by withholding your spirituality.”

I’m a deeply spiritual person but had been hiding that part of myself on social media and in some conversations. So I committed to come fully out of the spiritual closet and to not run right back in, the way I have in the past.

  2. Slowing Down

Before the pandemic hit I was working multiple jobs, travelling all over the city for work, dance classes, visits with friends, seeing clients. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off and didn’t have much time to slow down and be with myself.

When everything was cancelled, I started going for walks everyday. I started to get to know my neighbourhood better. I started spending my days off reading books on the back porch and writing in my journal. I learned to work less, be less busy and enjoy myself more.

  3. Love

I also fell in love this year. After 6 years of failed dates, dating the wrong person and working on myself, it all paid off and I met this incredibly sweet kind guy on Hinge.

For any of you who are still struggling with this, I want to say it is possible. I did everything: I read the Soulmate Secret, Getting the Love You Want, I made my list of the characteristics I wanted in a partner, I talked about it in therapy, I dated lots of people and nothing worked. Until something did. So you might be just a few steps away from that something that works.

And I got to experience the joy of loving somebody. Before we ever said the words out loud, I’d look at him and think, “I love this guy” and feel that feeling in my body and soul.

And a surprising side effect is that it helped me to love myself more. I was practicing loving him and so it made it easier for me to look at myself in the mirror and love myself.

And the love for myself has continued to deepen. In the fall I signed up for a marketing course that has challenged me to deepen my love for myself even more. As homework, I’ve journalled about all the things that I love, all the things I’m good at and have continued to strengthen my self worth.

  4. Sacred Goal Setting

I finally learned how to goal set in a way that feels spiritually aligned. I used to goal set in a way that was either:

  • PASSIVE: I would set a goal, forget it, never work on the goal and fail.
  • Or MILITANT: I’d try to beat myself with a stick on the way to a goal and then beat myself up if I wasn’t making it there quickly enough.

Both ways were not fun for me and ultimately didn’t get the results I wanted. So it was a total revelation to learn how to goal set in a way that was deeply healing and led to the results I wanted.

Here’s the secret sauce:

  1. I’d do a spiritual practice before working on my goal. It was very short just a few minutes of deep breathing or reciting a mantra.
  2. I’d write down all the reasons that I thought I COULDN’T achieve my goal and see what old beliefs needed to be healed to achieve the goal.
  3. Then I worked on healing these old beliefs either by journaling on my own or with my own Core Energetics practitioner.

And the result was that I basically achieved my financial goal for the month in ONE DAY. So not only was it deeply healing but it FREAKING WORKED!!

And that’s exactly what I’ve created the FREE Sacred Goals Workshop, where you’ll set your sacred goals for 2021 and I’ll teach you the exact steps that led to me easily creating my goal in a way that felt aligned and healing.
