Heart-Centred Scheduling

I used to sit down at my desk with the goal of “working on my business.” I’d pull out my agenda, figure out what to focus on and start working. After a few hours, I’d stop.

The main problem with this strategy was lack of productivity and distractions. I’d waste time on Facebook and sometimes I’d work on one blog post or task for hours and hours and hours.

And I was spending too much time on things that didn’t get me closer to my goals and dreams.

I needed a change.

Now this is not really a glamorous thing to talk about but the best self care strategy I implemented in 2019 was SCHEDULING.

I used to think, “I can’t do that. I’m not organized enough. I’m not disciplined enough. It’s not my style. It won’t work for me.”

But it’s absolutely changed everything. I trust myself more and I’m less frantic, more calm and more clear in my business.

I know what parts of my business are most important in any given week, so I’m not wasting time working on things that don’t move me towards my goals and the impact I want to make.

So I want to share my intuitive heart-centred scheduling process with you:

  1. Take a few deep breaths and write down all your values in your business and your life.

    What is important to you?

    It could be:
    – financial stability
    – your family
    – spirituality
    – kindess

    – selfless service
    – fun and playfulness
    – living in the moment

    Write down as many of your values as you can think of. Keep going and don’t pick up your pen for a few minutes.
  2. Then take a few more deep breaths and look back at your list. Put your hand on your heart and feel into your top 3 values for this season of your life.What’s the top priority will shift and change but decide what’s most important to you in this moment.

    Circle them.
  3. Decide what day of your week is going to be your planning day. Some people like to do Sunday. Personally I do it on Monday. Doesn’t matter as long as it works for you, choose your day.
  4. On your planning day write everything on your to do list
    – business and life
    – bills to pay
    – blog posts to write
    – marketing to do
    – laundry
    – cleaning the bathroom
    – clients

  5. Then based on your top 3 values organize your to do list into 3 categories:

    High Priority

    Medium Priority

    Low Priority

    If there are items on your list that are not in alignment with your current priorities, take them off the list completely or put them on different list for long term projects.
  6. Starting with the HIGH PRIORITY ITEMS, schedule everything into your calendar.

    If you don’t know how long something is going to take, guess. You can always move things around later if it takes a bit longer or is a bit quicker.

    Be heart centred and connect your to do items with your top 3 values. Don’t write 9:00 – 10:00 am “Prospecting,” write 9:00 – 10:00 am reaching out to help current and prospective clients.

    And make sure to schedule lots of breaks and time off for yourself in addition to all the work. I typically work for 2 – 3 hours straight and then take a one hour break.

    On my break, I allow myself to do whatever is going to most refresh me so that when I come back to my next task I’m refreshed and ready to keep working towards my values.

    The last step is to fully show up for yourself. Some days you might not feel like getting out of bed to work on the project you scheduled for 9 am. Get out of bed anyways.

    Last year I realized that I was willing to drag my tired self out of bed and take an Uber if I was running late to meet a friend but sometimes I would sleep through my morning tasks I’d scheduled for myself.

    Now sleep is super important, so I’m not at all trying to advocate for only getting a little sleep. But I want to treat my work on my business as seriously and actually even more seriously than I do my social engagements.

    Value your time. Show up for yourself and your values.

    And the more you do this, the more you’re going to build your confidence in yourself and the more you’re going to build a business that’s both profitable and soul-nourishing.

Yes – there are a lot of steps. But it will only take you one hour on a Sunday night or Monday morning and is going to have you feeling much more fulfilled in the long term.

After implementing this, your time off is really going to feel AMAZING because you know the priorities for the week have been taken care of.

You’re absolutely going to love this! And then sometimes, when you don’t want to do a specific task, you might hate it…

At that point it’s time to tune in, feel into whether the task is truly aligned with your values, and if it is to go ahead with it.
