death

a young girl
strolls into the middle of the room
looking for her father
she waits

and there is a weighty-ness to her waiting
not the delicate anticipation of a new love
but the heaviness of knowing and not knowing

why did his light blow out so young?
and even though she knows full well
why does she wait?

Bridge

we stand
on the bridge
connecting two worlds

facing each other
facing out
what moves in the stillness?

stepping forward
backward
not knowing where we’re going.

we stand
on a bridge
connecting to worlds
we dance.

the boutique

she walks into the boutique
takes off her shoes

not wanting to be found
she walks barefoot
stealth

avoiding the sales rep
that is headed straight for her
she busies herself with a rack of skirts
camouflaging into the floral

the sales rep ignores all signs of engrossedness
‘can i help you with anything?’

no.
she sighs
puts on her shoes
and walks out.

Lupins

bringers of spring
filling ditches
decorating roadsides
planted by the wind

unkempt
wildness
sprawling bright beauty

lupins
grown beside Mary
carefully tended
colorful

cut back
in high summer
to make space
for the next floral flush

lupins
seeds hard like black beans
spread out on the table
placed into packages

stored
dry
for the winter.
