Soft
and strong
and supple
The riptide rips
her out of my hands
Lost
at sea
she swims
to the new world.

Eyelashes
Long
Luxurious
Beautiful when you get close.
She blinks softly
then nudges me in the stomach with her horn.

I am touched
by the stories
of Syrian refugees
trying to find their way
to safety
I am touched.
I am touched by the young men
Drumming
Drumming for the missing and the murdered
Touched.
I am touched by the pain and the sadness
in their eyes
in their eyes and in their hearts
touched.
Why is there so much pain?
The young girl asks her mother
touched.

He asks me
As we lie on our backs in the grass.
A little break.
We get our bikes
And ride into our freedom
Dumpster diving
On the way
Home.
All day all night dancing
I stay away from studying
All day all night
Home.

At 27
Is different
Than at 22.
Less furiousness,
Wildness
Fewer plane tickets purchased.
Late nights, walks in the evening.
Picnics, bike rides and beauty.
Happiness.
Falling in love at 27,
Is different.
You give me that look
And it’s over
I want to fight you
Bite your head off
Throw you to the ground
Kick and claw and wrestle
Verbally
Kick and claw and wrestle
Physically
Kick and claw
Throw you to the ground.

The girl across
Gesturing wildly
“And I don’t even care!”
She beats her hand rhythmically
And I am distracted
Headphones in
And I don’t even care.
Emotions
Wanting to be let out
But we just don’t even care

Rips me apart
My heart exposed
To the breeze
Cleansing
Cool and soft
It dangles in the wind
Cleansing
And I have never been so exposed.

Flip into friendships
Sprawled on the grass
We ask
Who is the mother?
And who is the daughter?
And where do we go from here?
I buy my mother a cup of coffee
And we sit a new cafe
in a new city
and talk about our lives.
I am stressed about this new city life
And she is worried about my sister’s apartment
And where do you go from here?
Mother
Daughter
Up-side down.

Their bright green bodies intriguing?
Their capacity to spring?
Sprung,
they fly through the air
uninhibited.
They are the acrobats
of the forest.
And their soft songs
lull us
to sleep.
