The Great Lakes have been my baptism
the forests whispering prayers
as the wind turned into my breath.
And poetry has become my refuge.
Opening me up,
drawing me forward,
making me whole.
I love the
going faster and faster
and then suddenly the resistance of the runway disappears
we lift up
free
the motion rocks me
holds me
and I am carried home.
I stand in the mountain
strong and still
quiet and alive
hollow but not broken
I feel my heart beat
blood coursing through my veins
and I am full of blood
from the tips of my toes
to the tops of my shoulders
to the tippy top of my head
coursing
vibrancy
the blood rushes
my breath moves
in and out
up and down
my rib cage rocked
by the waves of breath
and this is asana
moments with my body
where times stops
and I become whole again.

with care
the alien
clasped his mug
with both hands
feeling the warmth
a simple cup of tea
she looked up with thanks
you are safe now.
you are home.

out?
Who turned off the lights?
And what is art anyways?
Is art the perspective from which we view the world?
Or is it more static?
Created
Formed
Form.
And as I write by candle light
I can’t quite imagine writing any other way
Poetry is not written in the bright sun.
It is written in the shade,
In private moments
with the heart.

to writing
the pen touches the paper
and I can’t stop.
I forget all responsibility
I forget to breathe,
getting it down.
love letters to my soul
quietly scribbled
in the night
and I’m not afraid of God now
because I know there is truth in my heart
and that the sun rises and falls to show us our shadows
and the tide is to sweep away our sorrows
pulling them from us violently
or softly
I live
in the hidden place
on the moon.

my body has run
out of steam
but caffeine
pumps through my chest
wanting
release
what is it about night-time writing?
not being able to stop
the whirling thoughts of the day
am I wrong or am I right?
and do I deserve this breath?
the air is quiet
the trees stand still
the stars flicker
and all is well.

hippity hoppity,
hip hop,
frogs go,
frogs stop.
eyes large
they see the world
from all sides.
each perspective
carefully considered
before
the next

I don’t want to write about feminism.
Must every act be political?
And is the world a stage,
or a battleground?
Must I be vulnerable?
And even though with every cell of my body
I believe that women should be treated with dignity and respect
that all humans
regardless of race, gender, creed
should be treated with dignity and respect,
I cowered
at the thought
of wearing
an ‘I am a FEMINIST’
pin.

like a mouse trap
I snap closed
getting my fingernails underneath
is impossible
I try
I pry
my heart back open
only for it to snap closed again
and sometimes
I get glimpses
of openness
moments
of connection
I drink dew drops
of peace
before the door closes
on my singing heart
so I sit
singing to the closed door
and gently
again
it opens.
