being a creature of this earth

DSCF1561

breathe

feel your body
back against the chair
feet on the floor
breathe

anger
courses through my veins

sadness
overcomes my body

breathe.

The Body’s Language

bares all
even when my words say
I’m fine, I’m great.

My jaw tight
face scrunched
shoulders hunched
with anger

“Are you sure you’re okay??”

“Of course I’m okay.  I’m relaxed okay?”

My sister gives me a look and starts to laugh
gently.

I laugh too
and then cry
the body
speaks.

Asana

I stand in the mountain
strong and still
quiet and alive
hollow but not broken

I feel my heart beat
blood coursing through my veins
and I am full of blood
from the tips of my toes
to the tops of my shoulders
to the tippy top of my head

coursing
vibrancy
the blood rushes
my breath moves
in and out
up and down

my rib cage rocked
by the waves of breath

and this is asana
moments with my body
where times stops
and I become whole again.

Body of Work

DSCF1566

to create a body of work
you need
a body

and not just any-body
or some-body
but your very own body

to create a body of work
you need to breath into your lungs
and feel into your toes
and listen to your heart
your mind
your gut

you have to want it so badly that it hurts
and trick yourself to keep going when you forget

you have to run fast towards the finish line
sprint even
in your first draft

get it down!
fast.

polishing can come in leisurely afternoons
getting it down must be squeezed into crevices
as you wait for the bus
the 5 minutes before the dental hygienist calls your name
before you go to bed
for 10 minutes before you call your partner
squeeze it in!

and how do you keep going at this breakneck speed
when your project is much larger than a postage stamp
and you do and don’t know where it’s going to end up?

trick yourself
any way you can
and keep going
